Religion and War ProgrammeProgramme Leader: Dr Geogre Wilkes
The soon-to-be-launched Programme on Religion and War promotes dialogue and cooperation between scholars with an expert knowledge of different dimensions of armed conflict and peace-making, examining the burning ethical debates of our time through a rigorous scholarly encounter across a range of religious traditions and academic disciplines. The Programme was founded in view of the absence of forums facilitating sustained interdisciplinary scholarship and dialogue beyond the confines of denomination or political persuasion, and with an eye on the potential for scholarship to affect the fast-changing theory, law and practice of armed conflict. The Programme links scholars across the UK with organisations and individuals involved in the management and resolution of recent and ongoing conflicts, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, and given the sensitive nature of this a part of its work allows scholars to engage across these conflicts and from sensitive positions under Chatham House rules. Early projects include seminars, lectures and the publication of resources to facilitate further scholarly and public debate.

Welfare Futures ProgrammeProgramme Leaders: Andrew Bradstock and Francis Davis
Building on a major commission from the Archbishop's Council of the Church of England "Welfare Futures" is a process of consultation, research and publication at the cutting edge of reflection on the relationship between the Anglican Church and the "welfare state". Should the Church involve itself in the "commissioning agenda" in public service reform? What should be the Anglican response to the rise of the social enterprise movement? How might the Church work more creatively with those in poorer neighbourhoods and/or who are facing long term social exclusion in other areas? Combining fresh evidence from the Anglican Communion in general, English experience in particular and with significant ecumenical referencing, "Welfare Futures" seeks to assist the Church of England's Bishops in their long term planning at a time when they are being sought ought as strategic partners in welfare delivery by policy makers and politicians of all complexions. The Programme also includes a separate strand of activity focused on debates and policy in faith based education, on the interface between law, religion and public policy and a partnership with Caritas Europa regarding its work on EU social inclusion strategy.
